found one of my old cricket notebooks in a photo aai sent while clearing a cupboard. entire pages of averages written by hand, with headings in different colours, because apparently ten-year-old me already needed a dashboard. the funny part is that i remember a particular innings as brilliant even though the numbers beside it are fairly ordinary. must have been who i watched it with, or how close the match was. now i'm wondering how many of my very confident opinions are just afternoons i liked with statistics added later. flatmate says all of them, which is a strong claim from someone whose analysis begins and ends with his favourite player.

Odile m'a fait essayer de tourner un bol et j'ai serré l'argile comme une pièce qui voulait se faire la malle, résultat une espèce de cendrier de travers, très contemporain paraît-il ! Les pouces ont vite commencé à chauffer, pourtant je forçais beaucoup moins qu'au garage. C'est la pression tenue au même endroit qui me coinçait. J'ai laissé la terre tourner sous les paumes un moment, sans chercher à lui faire obéir, frais et glissant, ça change de l'huile. En repartant j'avais de la boue séchée jusqu'aux coudes et les mains toutes douces. Le bol, lui, n'a pas survécu à notre rencontre.

I sat outside the kiosk while the boy read beside me, and he asked why I always pull my shirt straight before sitting. I had already done it twice without knowing. The chair was low, so the cloth gathered across my stomach again whenever I leaned towards his book. We moved to the bench where my feet could rest properly. There was a little breeze under the roof, and for some time my shoulder was quiet. I could feel the boy's arm against mine when he pointed to a word. Later he ran off to play and I remained there until my wife called. Standing up required more care than sitting down had.

The pension letter had three different amounts on it and I nearly put it away after finding the biggest one. That would've been a nice way to do the math if I wanted a surprise later. Turns out one assumes years I haven't worked yet, and another is for stopping earlier. I read it twice, slow, with my finger under the lines like nobody was watching. Then my sister came up for coffee and I asked her to check that I'd got it right. We came to the same number, which was a relief. I'm not deciding anything this week. I just want the estimate on my fridge to be the one that belongs to my actual life, not the one I liked looking at. Still need to call about one bit in the small print.

Preparando un ejercicio he escrito la frase ojalá viviera cerca del mar y me he quedado pensando en por qué pongo siempre deseos tan bonitos que nadie necesita explicar. Todos quieren viajar, descansar, encontrar un piso luminoso, jamás que el vecino baje la tele o que les sobre dinero después del dentista. Luego el alumno quiere contar algo real y las fichas no le sirven. Estoy rehaciendo cuatro ejemplos con cosas más concretas, pero ahora me parecen demasiado míos. ¿Quién prepara la clase, una profesora o una chica de Zaragoza que quiere que su hermano no entre buscando el cargador? Bueno, ambas, supongo.

En revenant des parcelles, j'ai chanté un peu sur le vélo parce que la route était presque vide. Dans la montée, je n'avais plus assez de souffle pour finir les phrases, alors je gardais seulement le refrain entre deux respirations. Les cuisses chauffaient et la selle me semblait plus dure que le matin. Je me suis arrêté en haut, les pieds bien posés, pour boire et laisser passer cette chaleur dans les jambes. Une fois rentré, l'eau sur mes pieds a fait ressortir toutes les petites éraflures que je ne sentais pas en roulant. J'ai pris mon temps pour enlever la terre entre les orteils. Les chaussures pouvaient attendre devant la porte.

My fiancée visited after work and said she was pleased that we had an evening with no wedding arrangements to discuss. I was pleased too. We ate and she told me about her pupils. I did not have much to report, but I was comfortable listening. She asked whether I was tired because I had gone quiet. I said a little, but not tired of the visit. That seemed important to make clear. We went for a short walk before she left. I felt settled afterward. I sometimes give so little information that she has to ask twice to find out whether the evening was good. It was good.
