Daddy came downstairs to sit in the shop today. Brought his newspaper and started correcting the grammar on a leaflet, so yes, the principal is still on duty! I was happy to hear him bothering somebody other than me. Since his stroke I watch every little pause, even when he is only looking for his glasses. Today I caught myself watching again and got annoyed, not with him, with this fear that follows me around my own shop. Then he laughed at one of my boys and I laughed too. Such a normal sound. I wanted him to stay downstairs longer, but I said upstairs is cooler. Sometimes my mouth does not say the useful thing.

I'm not completely sure about a bird I saw past the point road. For a second I was sure, because it would have been new for my list, then it moved and I realised I'd mostly seen the shape and the light patch. The book has two possibilities that would fit, depending on details I can't honestly remember. It's annoying how my memory gets clearer after I look at the pictures, which is exactly when I trust it less. I put a question mark in the notebook instead of adding a number. I keep replaying the little turn it made on the branch. Not in a serious scientific way now, more like if I think about it long enough it'll turn around again.

A young woman on the block brought back the pan I had sent over with food and stayed on the porch to talk. I thought she needed something at first, which says more about me than her. She wanted to tell me her little boy liked the cornbread. We ended up talking about her mother and where she grew up, and I was sorry when she looked at the time. New people move in and I can get so busy wondering whether they'll take care of the place that I forget to find out who they are. I liked her. That is the whole report, no committee needed. Sent her home with tomatoes, since she had already returned one container safely.

mom asked how my class was going and i heard criticism before she had even finished the question. gave her the whole speech about my timeline, very mature, very prerecorded. she went quiet and said she only wanted to know if i liked it. ouch. i do like it, and i also want her to be impressed without needing to hand over a finished degree first, which is not a thing i managed to say on the phone. called back later and told her about an assignment instead. she asked real questions. still felt a little defensive, but also glad she was listening, and annoyed that those feelings insist on arriving as a package deal.

Practising story for grandson about my first crane in Abu Dhabi, but when I say outrigger he asks what animal is that. I was ready to explain all the parts and already lost him at first word. Now thinking use his toy truck, show why a heavy thing far away is different from same thing nearby, no big speech about my licence. He likes showing me things, not listening for twenty minutes to appooppan. Daughter says he is small, tell the funny part about my lunch falling over, that he understands. Yes but I want him knowing I did more than spill lunch in the Gulf. Maybe funny part first and crane part after, if he stays on screen.

a college friend told me his new salary and i did the correct supportive noises while immediately calculating the difference. i hate that i did that. he worked hard for the switch and wasn't even showing off, he was explaining why he could finally help his parents move. i was happy for that part, properly happy, then came home feeling behind at something i hadn't agreed was a race. my flatmates were watching cricket and i joined them but barely followed the over. kept wanting to mention the salary, as if they could give me a verdict on whether my life was still acceptable. didn't mention it. not sure that counts as handling it, but at least i didn't make it his problem.
