Trying to learn a short introduction for class without treating each word like a part I can swap around at will. I know what I want to say in English, then I get halfway through and find I've brought the English order along with me. Read it aloud in the workshop after closing and could hear where I was rushing, but not quite how to stop. Funny, I can copy an engine noise better than I can copy a sentence I've heard ten times. I've recorded the version I'm practising so I can compare it with the class notes. First recording was mostly the compressor. Very fluent, that thing.

Put the fiddle away and discovered my left hand was still curled around an imaginary neck, which is dedication or failure to release equipment, take your pick. I'd been trying one turn in the tune over and over, not fast, just until my fingers could find it without my eyes supervising. The old wrist grew stiff before the rest of me wanted to stop. Warm water felt wonderful, and then I sat on the kitchen floor with my back against the cupboard, listening to the kettle rather than another demonstration online. I can feel the tune in my fingertips even now. It sounded considerably better there than it did in the room.

Biasanya dia masuk cuma buat pinjam kabel, jadi gue agak sok santai waktu buka satu episode podcast. Belum lima menit dia nanya kenapa gue ngomong beda kalau direkam. Katanya kayak orang jelasin museum.

One of the old pier guys mentioned my dad while we were waiting, just a story about him refusing a terrible cup of coffee. Nothing ceremonial, which made it good. I could hear exactly how he'd have said it and laughed before the guy got to the end. Then I wanted him to keep talking, even if it was a story I'd heard already. I miss the ordinary version of my father more often than the big occasions would suggest. The one who complained about coffee and knew who'd borrowed his tools. I told Mom the story after work. She said he drank worse coffee at home without saying a word. That made me laugh again, and I was glad I'd called.

Spent an hour in the garden, mostly sitting on the low stool because the weeds were perfectly happy to wait while I moved it along. My knees felt stiff when I first got up, so I stood holding the fence until they remembered what we were doing. No great drama, just not straight off like I used to. The nice bit was washing my hands afterwards, warm water round the fingers and all that soil coming away from under my nails. I could still smell the mint I'd brushed against. Sat down with my tea and found a little leaf stuck to my sleeve, which my husband said had probably been there since breakfast. He could have mentioned it sooner.

Took the kayak out with no destination more ambitious than the next little beach. Much nicer having my legs sitting still for once and letting my arms do something without gloves on. There was a bit of breeze coming back, enough that I had to stop admiring things and paddle properly. Warm across the shoulders, cool water flicking off the blade onto my hands. By home I was ready for toast and the woodheater, in that order. My partner asked how far I'd gone. Hadn't measured it. Felt slightly smug about that until I realised I'd been counting strokes through the windy bit. Apparently even a lazy paddle needs a system.
