day off and my niece wanted me on the playground slide, which is apparently built for people without hips. i got halfway down and my sneakers stopped me so hard she started laughing before i did. after that we did the swings and i forgot how your stomach lifts on the way forward, even when you're not going high. my back felt less folded up than it does getting out of the camry and i stayed out there longer than planned. came home with warm legs and sand inside one shoe, exhausted in a way that did not involve staring through a windshield. still had the seat belt mark on my shirt from the drive over, of course lol

My grandson told me I couldn't come into his pretend shop because I hadn't brought any money. I've been handed babies in every sort of room imaginable and this wee merchant nearly reduced me to tears over a plastic till. Not sad tears. He had such a serious face and kept explaining the rules as though I was a bit slow. I went to the kitchen for some buttons, which he refused to accept. Fair enough, standards. His grandad got served immediately with an imaginary card. I was outraged, obviously, and absolutely delighted. Stayed on the floor playing until my daughter arrived and asked which of us was running the place.

I listened again to an elder describing his first journey away from home, and the best part was a long pause where he seemed to be remembering the road before he could describe it. For radio I keep wanting to shorten it. Then I worry that without it his answer sounds like something prepared for me, not something he was discovering while we talked. I have listened so many times I can no longer tell whether the silence feels alive or simply too long. My fiancée suggested playing it for somebody who wasn't there. Sensible advice, annoyingly. I am very good at asking other people questions, less good at admitting I need a listener.

boss left me to explain the pump shed job to the farmer today
he was standing right there but didnt jump in or do the whole translation into older bloke thing
farmer actually asked me the questions and waited for the answers
sweet as
said to the fencer later that it was just a normal job, which it was, except ive gone over that bit three times while making dinner
then the dog nicked a piece of meat off the bench and ruined my moment of being the competent adult
not angry with him for long, hard to stay angry with something looking that pleased with itself
i was pretty pleased too to be fair

i keep thinking about how much of a day disappears between a night shift and the next one. on paper there's loads of time, and i write these plans like i'm going to cook, see my girlfriend, lift and read a whole chapter before work. then i stand in the kitchen at three in the afternoon eating a banana while mum's leaving for her shift and somehow that's the entire overlap. i drew our hours next to each other on the back of an envelope. wasn't trying to optimize our relationship or whatever. i just wanted to find one evening we could get takeout and both be awake for it.

Tried sitting on the porch with my feet on the opposite chair while my daughter drew beside me. Ten minutes in, I realized I had been holding my shoulders up despite having no keyboard, no phone and no immediate reason to hurry. I let my arms hang and felt the warmth along the backs of my legs where the sun reached under the railing. My left knee was quiet in that position. The urge to stand arrived well before any discomfort, which was irritating information about myself. I stayed until my daughter needed a different crayon. Getting up slowly felt unfamiliar. She asked why I was stretching when we had not done anything.
