Got to thinking about my old Cutlass with no reverse while I was pulling a guest's little sports car into a space you could barely fit a grocery cart in. People hear no reverse and ask how I drove it. You thought ahead, that's how, picked somewhere you could pull through and didn't let anybody park in front of you. Had that system working pretty good at sixteen, though my brother remembers one afternoon we had to push. He tells that part every time. Sometimes I think I remember that car more clearly than anything I owned after it, right down to the hot seat smell. Still wouldn't trade the Crown Vic for it. Nearly got that one ready.

Je me suis lavée après le chantier et l'eau a piqué les petites coupures de mes doigts, celles qu'on oublie tant que les mains restent occupées. Je voulais faire vite mais je suis restée assise un moment, les pieds dans l'eau, la chaleur du toit sortait encore de mon visage. Ma coépouse parlait dans la cour et pour une fois je l'ai laissée répondre aux enfants. En me relevant les genoux étaient lourds, pas comme le matin. J'ai pris mon temps pour enfiler un pagne propre, sans les clous dans la poche, et ça change déjà de ne plus sentir leur poids contre la cuisse. J'avais faim. J'ai mangé assise avant d'aller regarder le carnet.

My younger brother rang to discuss something from his nursing course and kept asking what I thought, although he plainly knew more about the subject than I did. I enjoyed that more than I care to admit. Usually our conversations reach the cost of something quite quickly, and I listen with part of my mind already doing arithmetic. This time he was excited and wanted an audience who remembered how hard he had worked to get there. I was proud of him, but also pleased to have a call that did not make me useful through my wallet. Afterwards I felt rather mean for noticing that distinction so clearly.

接到一个乘客，跟他聊了一路儿子的学校，聊得还挺开心。回家儿子说起班里的事，我却催他先把作业拿出来，说完自己都觉得不对。我能耐心听陌生人讲二十分钟，到自己儿子这里，第一句话就是查作业。他脸一下垮了，没再讲。我有点烦，也说不清是烦他还是烦自己，后来去他房间问刚才谁跟谁吵架了，他说没什么。听到这个没什么，我心里更不安逸，知道他是不想重讲，不是真的没事。想给他买点吃的又觉得这也不顶用。明天早点收车，吃饭的时候不看接单消息，至少让他把一句话讲完，别老等他不说了才想起来问。

كنت أرسم على الطاولة المنخفضة في غرفة الضيوف، وكلما أردت رؤية الخط من قرب انحنيت أكثر حتى صار رأسي أمام كتفيّ تقريباً. لم أنتبه إلا حين جاء ابني ليضع ورقته بجانبي، فرفعت وجهي إليه وشعرت بالشد بين الكتفين. نقلت الورقة إلى مكان أعلى ووقفت قليلاً، وكان غريباً كيف اتسعت حركة يدي بعدما كنت أحرّك الرسغ وحده. بقي أثر التعب، لكنه صار واضحاً بدل ذلك الضيق الذي كنت ألوم عليه اللوحة. عند غسل الفرش تركت الماء يمر على أصابعي وقتاً أطول من اللازم، ثم انتبهت أن كُمّي ابتل أيضاً، وهذه ليست ضمن طقوس الرسم المفيدة.

No ensaio a gente repetiu a mesma parte até encaixar e quando saiu certinho senti o braço todo leve, antes eu tava prendendo os dedos demais nas cordas. Depois de tanto carregar caixa no mercado é bom usar a mão pra um movimento pequeno que faz um som grande junto com os outros. Saí com as pontas dos dedos quentes e a camiseta colada nas costas, nem vi o tempo passar. Em casa vó mandou comer antes de tomar banho porque já tava esfriando, eu sentei ainda batendo o pé no ritmo e ela pediu descanso pra mesa kkk. A fome veio toda de uma vez, repeti e só depois percebi o cansaço nas pernas. Cansaço bom, dava vontade de ouvir a gravação deitado sem mexer mais nada.

Ma femme veut qu'on parte quelques jours sans voiture quand je n'aurai plus les astreintes. Je fais tout de suite la liste des bagages, des correspondances, du retour si quelqu'un a besoin de nous, et elle me demande de commencer par choisir un endroit. Elle n'a pas tort. Je cherche une ville où on peut marcher et où il y a un bassin ouvert tôt, ça la fait rire que la première visite soit pour la piscine. Mais je voudrais aussi un lieu qu'elle ait envie de découvrir. Elle a posé deux brochures sur la table, je les ai enfin ouvertes sans regarder d'abord les horaires de train.

My son asked one of the other robotics parents for help while I was standing right there. I was glad he knew who to ask, in principle. In practice I felt sidelined and spent the next few minutes finding a reason to check their work, which they had under control. I had missed the last meeting for the interchange project, so of course they already had a plan. There was nothing unfair about it. He was excited to show me the finished mechanism afterward and I almost spoiled that by pointing out a possible improvement. I stopped myself, but it bothers me that I needed to. I'd been looking forward to being useful more than to seeing what he had done.

We lost the pub quiz by one point and I was disproportionately annoyed because I'd talked everyone out of the correct answer. Said I was certain, too. An excellent phrase to have witnesses for. My partner was delighted, not that we'd lost but that the supposedly careful one had argued so confidently for nonsense. I laughed with him eventually, though there was a minute when I wanted to explain exactly why my guess had been reasonable. Nobody needed that speech over the crisps. It was a good evening, genuinely, and I'm glad we went. Still looked the answer up again on the tram, as if the internet might take my side on a second reading. It didn't.

He vuelto a ensayar mentalmente la explicación del retablo para esa charla a los jubilados que todavía no he pedido dar. Me sé las fechas, pero en cuanto imagino preguntas pienso en todo lo que no estudié, como si alguno fuera a examinarme de la FP que dejé. Un guía me ha consultado hoy un detalle de la tabla y le he contestado sin dificultad. No es lo mismo que hablar ante veinte personas, ya lo sé, aunque tampoco parece que tenga la cabeza vacía. Podría proponer diez minutos dentro de una visita, no la mañana entera. Llevo un buen rato redactando cómo preguntarlo y al final sólo hacen falta dos frases.
