I sang rather strongly in church today and felt it in my chest before I felt it in my throat. There is one part I always enjoy, where the voices rise together, and I stood straight instead of resting back as I sometimes do. By the next verse I needed a quieter breath and let the others carry it. Mama says the choir can manage without my supervision. On the walk home my knees were slow but my upper body felt easier, as though I had been holding myself tightly all morning and only noticed after letting go. I sat in the parlour with water and did not put on the television immediately. My voice had done sufficient work for one morning.

The book I am reading describes a city department as badly run, then gives most of its evidence from the men sent to reorganise it. They may have been right. They also had a reason to make the earlier arrangement look worse. I marked the source note to check later. This is the part of history I still find interesting, the difference between a thing happening and someone needing to describe it in a particular way. There may be staff records that tell another part. I do not need to write anything about it. I would like to see the records. The bus reached my stop before I finished the chapter, so the book is still open on the table.

my sister rang from manchester while i was making food and stayed on for nearly an hour. normally we do five minutes of taking the piss and then one of us has somewhere to be, but she started telling me about a crap day and i didn't really have a joke for it. felt weirdly good that she'd rung me, not mum. afterwards the flat seemed dead quiet even though the other two were shouting at fifa in the next room. i miss having her nearby, apparently. sent her a terrible photo of the dinner i'd let go cold and she said at least she hadn't ruined anything worth eating. honestly was quite pleased to be insulted again.

I was trying to put one of my mother's sayings into English and found that every accurate version sounded like instructions from a school noticeboard. In Swahili I can hear her impatience and affection together, in English I kept producing advice. Perhaps the missing part isn't another word but the person who said it, the way she looked at me before I had even finished my latest wonderful plan. My wife offered her version and I objected immediately, then realised hers sounded more like something a person would actually say. Naturally I have not admitted complete defeat. I wrote both down. The notebook now contains an argument instead of a proverb, which is also family history.
