One of my students knows every step when we talk before the lesson, then forgets the next one when a car appears behind us. I have been thinking about how much I say at that moment. Three useful instructions can become three more things she is trying to carry in her head. Today I asked her what she could see, and waited for her answer before adding anything. It took longer than simply telling her. I wanted to fill the silence more than once. She found her way through the manoeuvre, not perfectly, but knowing what she had done. Next lesson I shall see what she remembers without my prompting.

Un copain a envoyé les photos d'un anniversaire où je n'étais pas. J'avais dit que je bossais, donc rien d'injuste, personne ne m'avait oublié. Pourtant j'ai regardé chaque photo en cherchant avec qui je me serais retrouvé à table. Ça m'a foutu un petit coup que la soirée ait l'air aussi bien sans moi, ce qui est franchement nul comme réaction. Je suis content qu'ils se soient amusés. J'aurais seulement voulu être dans le bruit avec eux, pas recevoir tout ça au fournil entre deux choses à faire. J'ai mis un commentaire drôle sous une photo. Après j'ai envoyé au copain qu'il me manquait, sans faire toute une histoire.

I have been saying I will finish the solar training when work becomes quiet, which is a fine plan if customers agree to stop calling at a convenient time. They have not agreed. Amina asked how many hours I actually need, and I couldn't answer because I had been thinking of the whole course as one enormous task. I checked the modules tonight and put two short sessions in the job book. I may have to move them, but at least I know what I'm moving. I don't want to become the man who recommends new systems confidently and keeps postponing the part where he learns them properly. The supplier's English is slow reading for me; it is still reading I can do.

ولدي طلب أساعده يرتب طاولته وأنا أول شي سويته أخذت العلب الفاضية أبي أرميها، طلع مخليها عشان يقسم فيها قطع لعبة يفكها ويركبها. وقفت، لأني كنت ببدأ أفرز غرفته على طريقتي كأنها شحنة عندنا. سألته وش اللي يحتاجه قريب ووش اللي ما يستخدمه، صار يشرح لي أكثر من يوم كامل وأنا أسأله كيف المدرسة. بعض الأشياء عندي شكلها خردة وعنده لها ترتيب أعرفه إذا سألته. خليناه يختار مكان العلب وأنا ساعدته يمسح الرف، لكن للحين ما فهمت ليش يحتفظ بسلك ما له رأس من الجهتين، يقول يمكن أحتاجه.

Mi gemela estaba sacando cosas del cuarto para la boda y encontró una de mis máscaras viejas. Se la puso para molestarme y nos reímos un buen rato, hasta que volvió a guardar sus cajas y me cayó otra vez que de verdad se va a ir. Yo llevo años diciendo que quiero más espacio. Ahora miro el lado del librero que va a quedar libre y no se me ocurre qué poner. No es que quiera que cancele nada, estoy contento por ella, sólo me da una tristeza medio mensa que todavía no sé explicarle sin que me haga burla. Le dije que la máscara se quedaba aquí. Ella contestó que obvio, que no iba a llevarse también mis mugres.

The wind was stronger along the lake than it had been outside my building. I kept my hands in my pockets for the first part of the walk. After a mile I was warm enough to take them out, and the stiffness from standing at the counter was less noticeable. I stopped at a bench on the return route. There was no screen to focus on and my eyes felt better. I had brought water and drank most of it before continuing. At home I ate sitting down because the kitchen counter was covered with papers. The chair was comfortable. I remained there after the meal instead of immediately putting the plate away.

Day off and the kid wanted to be carried up the hill. Four years old and apparently finished with walking. Had her on my shoulders for a bit and could feel every step through my thighs, not sore exactly, just very aware I was taking another human uphill after a week on section. She kept leaning forward to tell me things directly into my skull. Put her down by the dairy and my whole body felt lighter than it had before I picked her up. Bought milk and stood outside drinking water while she investigated one crack in the pavement for about six years. Back home I ate sitting down. Luxury establishment.

Thirty-eight present and we did the action song twice because apparently once is not enough for people whose knees are brand new. I was bending to pick up the picture cards, standing to show them, bending again because somebody dropped a shoe, by the last song I put a chair beside me and did the actions sitting. My babies copied me, so now we have a seated version hahaha. On the jeepney home my legs felt heavy and my voice came out lower than usual when I asked to stop. Mama said I should not sing tonight. I only sang quietly while sorting the clothes for sale, but she heard from downstairs. That woman has excellent monitoring skills.

Ma femme m'a demandé par où passer pour rejoindre une amie et je lui ai donné trois itinéraires avant de me rappeler qu'elle y allait en tram. Dans ma tête, Lyon est pleine de rues où l'on peut tourner, d'entrées de parking et d'endroits où s'arrêter deux minutes. Pour elle ce sont des stations et des bouts à pied entre les deux. On regardait la même adresse et on ne voyait pas du tout le même trajet. Ça m'a amusé, puis je me suis demandé combien de coins je connaissais seulement à travers une vitre. Il y a une petite place où je dépose souvent des gens sans jamais y mettre les pieds. J'irai peut-être boire un café là, une fois sans attendre quelqu'un.

Dad came round and inspected the garage shelves again. Pointed out one fixing he would have placed differently, after I'd shown him the new arrangement and explained what it carried. I said it wasn't going anywhere, which it isn't, then spent the evening considering moving the fixing. Annoying because he'd also said the garage looked good and offered me some timber, so it wasn't exactly a hostile visit. Still wanted him to leave one thing alone for once. Sent him a picture later of the cat sitting on the shelf in question. He replied that at least somebody was using all that engineering.
