Had the grandies on the back lawn and spent longer throwing a soft ball than I'd intended. Nothing strenuous by their standards, but my shirt was warm across the back and I was glad of the garden chair when they moved on to another game. My left knee objected to getting down for a ball under the table, so I recruited the smallest member of the party, who fitted rather better. After they left I sat with a glass of water and my shoes off, feeling the grass cool under my feet. Pleasant afternoon. The wife says that counts as exercise even if I haven't measured it. I would call it light duties with unusually demanding supervisors.

گاؤں واپس آ کر چارپائی پر لیٹا تو پہلے کچھ دیر لگا جیسے ابھی بھی گاڑی چل رہی ہے۔ اسلام آباد سے راستے میں شیشے کے ساتھ سر ٹکا کر سو گیا تھا، ایک طرف گردن اکڑ گئی اور جوتے اتارے تو پاؤں میں گرمی بھری ہوئی تھی۔ امی کھانے کا پوچھ رہی تھیں مگر میں نے کہا دس منٹ ایسے ہی رہنے دیں۔ ہوٹل کے نرم بستر پر بھی اتنی جلدی ٹانگیں ڈھیلی نہیں پڑتیں جتنی یہاں صحن میں پڑ گئیں۔ چھوٹا بھتیجا آ کر چارپائی ہلانے لگا، اس کو یہی کھیل سوجھا تھا۔ میں نے آنکھیں کھولے بغیر اس کا ہاتھ پکڑ لیا۔ اب سفر ختم ہونے کے بعد بھی مجھے یہ صاحب جہاز کے جھٹکے دے رہے تھے۔

K came home with a bag of apples from a farm visit and told me the farmer had asked after both dogs. I liked that. He has met them twice, and remembered which one gets nervous near the cattle gate. We ate an apple each on the steps while she told me about the call. There was nothing unusual to report and no reason to go inside yet. I was glad she had got home before dark. I said the apples were good, which they were. She put three aside for my lunch and left the rest within reach. One dog watched every bite. The other had gone to sleep across her boots.

J'avais proposé cela il y a assez longtemps pour ne plus trop attendre de réponse, alors j'ai fait celui qui avait déjà plusieurs idées de sorties. En vérité, j'étais content au point de parler trop vite et j'ai dû lui faire répéter les dates. Après le téléphone, ma femme m'a trouvé devant la carte, à chercher un chemin avec une plage et pas trop de montée. Elle m'a dit de ne pas lui préparer un examen de randonnée. Elle n'a pas tort. Je voudrais surtout que la petite ait envie de revenir, pas qu'elle se souvienne d'un grand-père qui marche trop loin.

Got out between fares and walked round the block instead of sitting there checking the same empty map. First few steps felt like my right leg hadn't received the update, tight from the hip down, then it eased enough to walk normally. Didn't go far. Bought water and stood in the shade drinking it, shirt sticking between my shoulder blades where the seat usually is. Back in the car I noticed how close I'd pulled myself to the wheel. Adjusted it, then adjusted it back halfway. Apparently even getting comfortable requires a trial period. At least I didn't eat the sandwich while steering this time.

今天最后几通电话我老想清嗓子，明明喝了水，开口还是有点干，像那句话卡在喉咙上没完全出去。摘耳麦以后耳朵红得很，摸一下还热，我去厕所照镜子才看到头发也被压扁一块，跟戴了个看不见的圈一样。出楼吹到凉风舒服多了，但表姐发语音来我真不想用语音回，不是嫌她烦，就是今天这张嘴已经上了够久的班。到家先把头发放下来，拿杯温水坐着，她问吃不吃面，我点头点得特别认真。她说你现在倒是安静，我本来想反驳，想想又算了，先把面吃了。

Mum introduced me to a woman at the bakery as the son who keeps the hospital going. Bit much. I said I only looked after the lifts and she said yes, that was what she meant. They both carried on talking while I stood there holding a loaf like I'd forgotten why I'd come in. Felt embarrassed, then pleased on the way back to the van, then embarrassed about being pleased. She's always making me sound more important than I am. Told the boss at home and she said Mum's allowed to be proud of her son. Fair enough. I didn't tell her I'd already gone over the conversation twice before getting out of the bakery car park.

Порядок был непривычный, но ответ получился верный, а объяснение после двух уточнений оказалось вполне разумным. Теперь проверяю не решение, а своё первое возражение: во-первых, я ещё не дослушал; во-вторых, уже приготовился исправлять. В инженерной работе я ведь признавал несколько способов получить нужный результат, если можно проверить каждый шаг. С детьми почему-то хочется одного, понятного мне заранее. Записал его способ рядом со своим. Пусть останутся оба, даже если запись у внука вышла тесная и стрелка пересекает цифру.

J'ai marché jusqu'au bord du Doubs sans chercher à tenir une allure particulière. L'air frais me faisait respirer plus profondément et, après une demi-heure, j'avais les mains suffisamment chaudes pour retirer les gants. Cela m'a surpris, elles étaient glacées en partant. Le dos restait un peu raide entre les omoplates, mais je ne pensais plus à la position de ma nuque à chaque mouvement. Sur le retour, j'ai senti la fatigue dans les cuisses, régulière, sans point précis à surveiller. J'ai mangé tôt en rentrant. Le soir, devant mon établi, mes doigts étaient stables mais je n'avais aucune envie de faire un travail minutieux. J'ai laissé le mouvement sous sa protection et gardé cette fatigue-là.

À 5h00 j'étais réveillée comme d'habitude, mais ce matin je suis restée couchée dix minutes de plus. Le dos tirait dès que je tournais les jambes et je n'avais aucune envie de retrouver le portail lourd. Nouba a posé son museau sur le bord du lit, elle aussi sait l'heure. Je me suis levée doucement, pieds nus sur le sol froid, puis j'ai attendu que l'eau chauffe en gardant les mains autour de ma tasse vide. Une fois dehors, marcher sur le parking m'a déraidie un peu. Ce n'était pas une bonne nuit, trop de petits réveils. À midi j'avais les paupières lourdes sans réussir à dormir pendant ma pause, ce qui m'agace encore plus que d'être fatiguée.
