No quería nada.

Practiced the chant in the apartment rather than the car. Standing makes a difference. I can take a full breath without the seat belt across me, although the longer phrase still runs out before I expect it to. Tried again with my shoulders down. Less pressure in the throat that time. The room was dry and I stopped for water; forcing the last notes was making my voice rough. I had not noticed how firmly I was holding the edge of the counter until I let go. My fingers were stiff. The neighbor moved something against the wall. Finished more quietly, which required a little less air but was not nearly as satisfying.

At home I was folding laundry when my wife said my hands still smelled of detergent from school. I could not smell it until I brought the towel close to my face. The skin beside my thumb felt tight, not cracked yet, but rough enough to catch on a thin shirt. Used the plain lotion and sat with my fingers open so it could dry, which made my son ask if I was waiting for nail polish. Very funny. My forearms were tired also, from wringing the mop after the corridor spill. Once I stopped gripping anything I noticed it less. Finished the shirts slowly, then left the heavier sheets for the two of us to fold together.

One of the apprentices showed me a small job he had finished for a neighbour, and the work was neat. I felt proud, then immediately started looking for something he might have missed. The boy was waiting for my opinion while I stood there making a fine moment unnecessarily long. I did tell him it was good. He smiled in that way people do when they were trying not to need your approval. I remember waiting for my own master like that. It made me happy and a little uncomfortable, having that much weight in somebody's day. On the way home I nearly called him with another reminder, but there was nothing new to remind him about.

My grandson rang to ask whether he could borrow a book he remembered seeing here. I was pleased he remembered it, and somewhat less pleased when he could describe the cover but not the title or the author. We found it between us. He said he would come and collect it himself instead of asking his mother to bring it. I told him that would be grand and that there was no hurry. There is no hurry. Nevertheless, I have put it on the table rather than returning it to the shelf. He may want the other one by the same author, so that is beside it. Two books will not overcrowd him.
