O meu pai ligou a dizer que o vizinho precisava de um canalizador e que tinha dado o meu número, até aí nada de novo. Depois disse que lhe tinha explicado que eu deixava tudo direito, mesmo o que não se vê. Fiquei à espera do resto da frase, de uma emenda qualquer, mas não houve. Disse-lhe que sim, podia ligar. No caminho para outro serviço dei comigo a assobiar, contente como um puto por causa de uma coisa que sei há anos. A Sandra ainda me perguntou o que tinha acontecido de tão bom. Contei como quem estava a falar de mais um cliente. Ela percebeu logo, tem essa mania.

Mi hija me pidió un cuento sin libro y empecé uno sobre un perro que se perdía. A los dos minutos ya quería saber dónde estaba el dueño, por qué no tenía collar y si había comido. Me encontré tratando de que todo cerrara, como si después tuviera que entregar un informe. Ella resolvió el asunto diciendo que el perro sabía manejar y podía volver solo. Me costó seguirle la idea, no por creer que estuviera mal sino porque yo ya estaba buscando una explicación para cada cosa. Ahora pienso en ese perro al volante y me da gracia. Mañana seguro me pregunta qué pasó después. Todavía no sé, pero probablemente no necesite averiguarlo antes de empezar a hablar.

J'avais encore l'impression de bouger une fois couchée, comme après les journées où on passe des heures sur l'eau. Rien de violent, juste le matelas qui semblait pas complètement décidé à rester droit. J'adore ce moment, même si ça paraît débile d'aimer avoir le bateau dans le lit. Mes cuisses tiraient quand j'ai changé de côté et j'avais raté un endroit en rinçant mes cheveux, ça sentait encore le sel. Mon frère parlait super fort dans le couloir, la télé tournait, et moi j'étais bien là, avec les jambes lourdes. J'ai mis de la crème sur mes mains sans allumer la grande lumière. Pas envie que la journée finisse tout de suite.

The clerk at the township was off and nobody printed the bids. I waited at my desk before asking, then was told I could open them myself if I had done the training. The young man did not say it rudely. That made it worse. I was put out with him all morning for a statement I could not dispute, and when the clerk called about something else I nearly asked her to deal with it from home. I did not. I have disliked men who make everyone work around them for most of my life. Being left with an empty desk did not feel like three mornings a week of useful retirement. I left at noon, as usual.

Fui mostrar pro neto como batia de trivela e ele já veio correndo buscar a bola, uai, o menino acredita no Professor! Fiz parado mesmo, sem inventar corrida, senti a parte de fora do pé pegar certinho e a bola foi baixa até ele. O joelho reclamou quando virei, aí sentei e fiquei só mandando, minha segunda especialidade. Depois de umas tentativas ele acertou uma e eu levantei depressa demais de alegria, tive que segurar no banco. Em casa deitei na rede com a perna esticada, vento no rosto, o corpo inteiro satisfeito com aquele chute pequeno. A mulher disse que ouviu o ronco. Eu estava estudando o lance de olhos fechados.

لعبنا فالحي وانا داخل سخون كنقول اليوم غادي نوريهم، من بعد جوج طلعات للقدام وليت كنتسنى الكرة تجيني هههه. ماشي نفس العيا ديال الخدمة، هنا النفس كيجري والساقين باقي باغين يزيدو. ملي جلسنا لقيت الرمل داخل الصباط والشراب هابط كامل، كنت داير بيه الماتش وما حسيتش. طلعت للدار بشوية باش ما نبقاش ننهج قدام الوالدة، هي شافتني وقالت سير غسل وجهك عاد هضر. الما البارد على راسي كان واعر، ومن بعد جاني الجوع حتى نسيت التلفون فالشاحن. ختي بغاتني نهبط نجيب الخبز، قلت ليها عطيني غير خمس دقايق، هاد الرجلين سالاو دابا.

وین میں آج کھڑکی کے پاس جگہ ملی تو گھر آنے تک گردن ایک طرف کیے باہر دیکھتی رہی، اتر کر سیدھا دیکھا تب پتا چلا کہ پیچھے کتنی اکڑن ہے۔ میز پر تو روشنی اور کرسی کا خیال رکھتی ہوں، سفر میں ایک ہی طرح بیٹھی رہتی ہوں۔ گھر آ کر دوپٹہ اتارا اور اپنی یاد کی ہوئی ورزشیں آہستہ کیں، پوتی سامنے کھڑی میری نقل کرنے لگی۔ ہنسنے سے کندھے بھی ڈھیلے ہوئے۔ آنکھیں آج زیادہ تھکی نہیں تھیں، نئے عدسے سے باریک کام صاف دکھتا ہے، مگر چہرہ آگے لے جانے کی پرانی عادت ابھی جاتی نہیں۔ چشمہ اتارنے کے بعد بھی ناک پر اس کا دباؤ کچھ دیر رہتا ہے۔

My daughter arrived with a bag and said she was staying tonight. I complained about the shoes landing in the hall before she had removed the second one. Standard welcome. Truth is I was pleased. She made tea and told me about a dispute with her flatmate while I pretended not to be rearranging the evening around her being there. When she said she might go out later, I felt a wee drop of disappointment and was annoyed at myself for it. She had not booked an evening entertaining her mother. We ate together anyway. Her shoes are still in the hall. No further complaint has been issued.

В зале убрал один подход на руки, потому что после рынка предплечье уже было забито, хотя я ведь там не штангу поднимаю. Раньше считал отдельно: работа работой, тренировка тренировкой. Кисти, похоже, этого разделения не знают. Когда точил нож, пришлось несколько раз менять хват, не от сильной боли, просто неприятно держать одинаково. Дома девушка попросила открыть банку, и я зачем-то сначала сделал вид, что всё нормально, вместо того чтобы взять полотенце. Открыл, конечно. Теперь сижу и думаю не про силу, а как завтра разделывать спокойно, без этого глупого желания каждый раз доказать, что рука целая.

A young fellow asked how I remembered all the houses on my route before everybody carried a phone. I said you walk it enough times and it stays put. Been thinking that's not quite right. I remembered who had the loose step, which dog was all noise, where the porch light stayed on for somebody working nights. The numbers came with the people. Drove past one of those houses today and the porch is gone, enclosed now. Still pictured the old woman who used to sit there with a radio. Couldn't tell the young fellow her name when I tried. Can tell him exactly where she kept the spare chair, though. Memory's an odd arrangement sometimes.
