My little sister said she might not come for the whole visit we'd planned because her friend was having people over that weekend. She's thirteen, of course she wants to see her friends, and I said sure, we can figure something out, but I was hurt in this embarrassingly young way, like I hadn't been picked. I'd already been saving things I thought we'd do together, not big things, a swimming spot and a place with good fries. Now I keep wanting to tell her about them so she'll choose us, which feels worse. I'm still glad she's coming for some of it. I just wish I'd waited to get so excited before the dates were actually settled.

my sister watched the new edit and sent back a voice message actually yelling about one of the clips. i played it again with the volume lower because dad was in the next room and i didnt want him making a whole thing of it. felt sick in a good way, like she still knows what im trying to do even when shes not here seeing the failed attempts. then she started telling me about people at college and i got quiet because i didnt know any of them. wasnt mad, just hard to picture her whole day without the house in it. sent her a video of gus doing nothing because she used to send those to me from upstairs. she replied immediately, which was cool.

My dear book, the morning was cool enough that I kept my wrapper around my shoulders while drinking kunu in the courtyard. My fingers were stiff, so I held the cup with both hands and let a grandchild open the little container I usually insist on opening myself. Later I touched the soil in a pot and it felt warm on top, cooler underneath. I still know that difference better than I know the buttons on this telephone. When I stood, my knees required their usual few patient moments. Then I walked to the gate. The stick came too, and earned its place for once instead of merely accompanying a respectable woman out of doors.

Our old collie found a tennis ball under the hedge and came trotting over with a look I haven't seen on him for ages. Usually he studies a thrown ball as though he's checking whether the effort has been properly justified. Today he wanted it again, and again, only a short distance but so pleased with himself. I was ridiculously happy watching him. Kept calling my partner to come and see, as if the dog had invented running. Then he lay down in the grass with the ball between his paws and that was the end of the performance. I stayed beside him a little while. I know he's old, I don't need reminding, it was just nice to have that bit of him back for an afternoon.

a regular brought a friend to the cart and spent five minutes explaining why my food was worth coming across town for while i stood right there trying not to look like i was listening. i was fucking delighted. embarrassing how delighted, considering i will tell anyone i don't need some stranger's review to know my lumpia are good. when they left i wanted to ring my wife immediately, then remembered she'd texted me about a hard morning at the clinic and i'd sent back a thumbs-up between orders. i still told her the story later, but first i asked about the animal she'd been worried about. she took a while to start talking.

Took the kids up the steps at home and the little one insisted on climbing without a hand. I stayed bent over behind him, ready, until my back reminded me I wasn't the one learning to walk up steps. At work I know exactly where my feet and hands are on a climb. At home I can twist myself into anything because somebody wants to show me something. We sat on the top step afterward, his shoulder against my arm, both of us breathing a little harder than the distance deserved. He was pleased, I was hungry. The marble was cool through my jeans and I stayed there till my wife called us in a second time.
