I'm deciding whether to plant fewer tomatoes next year. Every spring I allow for the ones that might fail, then most of them do fine and I spend late summer finding people who haven't already received a bag. My daughter says she will take all I grow, which is kind but not a planting plan. I could use half that space for something that doesn't come ready all at once. Then again, I enjoy carrying a bag next door and staying to talk. If I only grew what I ate, the rows would be short and the visits would need another excuse. I'll keep the good sunny row and leave the rest undecided for now.

went to the pool with my little brother and apparently i cannot do one underwater handstand anymore without getting water all the way up my nose, he rated mine a two 😭
actually felt so nice being in cool water instead of standing on the blacktop telling everyone to stop running, my shoulders were down for once and i could feel the sun on the bits sticking out
we kept racing to the steps and i was properly out of breath which is embarrassing because his legs are tiny
came home hungry enough to eat the leftover rice cold while mom was making dinner, hair still dripping down the back of my shirt

During the call from Ireland, my grandson recognised my voice before my daughter turned the camera towards him. He came nearer to the phone and touched the screen. I was pleased, more than I had expected, and repeated his name several times although he was looking directly at me. My wife laughed and told me to show him the small toy she had kept ready. After the call I remained at the table while she put things away. The house seemed very quiet, but not unpleasantly so. I was remembering his face coming into the picture. My daughter sent another photograph later. I have looked at it again before sleeping.

The young lad came into the kitchen to tell me something about a game and I made a smart remark before he'd got the whole thing out. Nothing vicious, just my usual carry-on. He said never mind and went upstairs. I'm annoyed with myself because I'd been waiting all evening for him to come out of the room and then managed to send him straight back. Knocked later with a plate and asked what he'd been saying. He told me, but quicker this time, standing in the doorway. I was glad he did. Still feel rotten about the way his face changed earlier. He's twelve. I don't need to win every conversation in the kitchen.
