My son fell asleep across me on the sofa and for once I didn't try to carry him straight to bed. His head was warm against my arm and one small heel was digging into my thigh, not painfully, just very definitely there. I could feel myself getting sleepy too, that heavy feeling behind the eyes when the house is finally quiet. By the time my husband came in my arm had pins and needles and I needed help getting up. We managed the move without waking our son, then I stood in the kitchen eating a banana because apparently all that sitting had reminded me I was hungry. Not the evening walk I had planned, but quite nice.

My granddaughter asked which of the six tomato plants was best. I said the one by the steps because it always is, then went through the notes I keep on the back of the seed envelope and found I had written the most fruit against the far end. I had been thinking of the large tomato I picked last week, not the whole summer. Those are two different answers. She wanted the sweetest, which I had not recorded and do not intend to start grading. We cut one from each end with lunch. I could not tell them apart. She could, or said she could, and took the rest of the one I had voted against home.

My daughter read the instructions on a school paper to me without stopping once. Long words also, not just the easy ones. I told her to read it again for her mother and she said Dad, she has already heard. Okay, but I had not! Am very happy with that girl. Sometimes I hear myself talking only about fees and uniforms, as if school is a bill they bring home. This time I wanted to sit there and hear what else she could read, but the young one kept climbing on the chair and demanding his turn with a book upside down. We laughed until their mother came to see what lesson I was teaching. A noisy one, clearly.

My father called to ask whether I had eaten. No receipt to check, no problem with the cab. I spent the first minute waiting for the actual request. He had stopped near a place that made the lentil soup my mother likes and was offering to bring me some. I said I had food. Then I called back and said yes. Felt foolish doing that over soup, but I was pleased when he arrived carrying the container upright in both hands. We ate together at my small table. He stayed less than an hour. After he left, I wished I had asked him to stay for tea instead of beginning to stack the bowls while he was still speaking.

I am trying to put dates on a handful of holiday photographs without making the children's ages fit whichever year I happen to remember first. One picture seemed certain until I recognised a coat my wife bought much later. It is a useful correction, although mildly irritating to discover how confidently I had arranged the wrong sequence. The photographs are not getting more accurate through my staring at them. I have sent two to my son and left the rest in a separate envelope. There is no deadline, only my preference for a finished drawer. Some of the labels will have to say approximately, a word I can tolerate in the right place.

The neighbour brought his boy over to collect the mower I'd fixed, and the boy wanted to know why it hadn't started. I showed him the dirty part and he stayed interested long after his dad started looking at his watch. That pleased me more than getting the engine running. After they left I kept thinking of things I should have shown him, then reminded myself he's got a whole life besides my garage. Carol says I could invite him back sometime if his folks agree. I said maybe. Truth is I'd like that, but I don't want to be the old fellow who catches a kid at the door and gives him an hour of instruction he never asked for.
