One of the girls in our room copied the way a customer called me madam and then snapped his fingers at me, and I laughed so much I had to tell her to stop. I had done the same voice earlier, but hearing her get it exactly right made the whole table come back, the man's face and his very important glass of water. Then suddenly I was upset, not crying, just not wanting to make that voice again. I know they were laughing with me only. She asked if I was angry with her and I said no, truly no. We watched our serial after that. I was glad she left the funny part alone without asking me to explain the rest.

Evidemment.

Walked the fence line with the heeler after a morning at the drawing table and found my hands stayed curled around an imaginary pencil for the first few minutes. Both thumbs were stiff, not enough to stop anything, just enough to make unlatching the gate a two-handed job. The dog waited with great patience until I got it open, then behaved as if the delay had been entirely my fault. Coming uphill I could feel my calves working and my feet finally warming inside the boots. Back at the house I left the drawings alone while I made lunch. Slicing an apple was a reasonable enough use for the hands for a while.

The sheets had dried outside and were cold when I brought them in. I made the bed and lay down on top for a moment, intending only to straighten a fold under my shoulder. A foolish excuse, since no one was monitoring my afternoon. The cotton felt pleasantly rough against my forearm, and with my eyes shut I could still smell the outdoor air in it. Dewey arrived and settled against my legs, effectively closing the matter of getting up. I wasn't asleep, though I may have missed a little of the radio. When I sat up the room was brighter than I'd expected. My eyes had enjoyed having nothing to read for half an hour.

Opened one drawer of Mother's dresser. Planned to make three piles and be done before lunch. Found spare buttons, a receipt for a vacuum cleaner she no longer owned, and an envelope of photographs with no names on the back. The receipt was easy. The photographs took the whole morning. I recognized a truck before I recognized the man leaning on it. Thought I remembered that trip accurately; apparently I have been putting the wrong year on it. Wrote what I was certain of on a separate sheet. No point turning guesses into labels. Drawer is still open, three piles have become five, and the room is not measurably improved.

One of the younger CWA girls brought me a little cutting in a pot, from a plant I had admired at her place weeks ago. I was very pleased she had remembered, especially as I had been rather firm about the hall keys at our last meeting. She said her mother always grew it and thought I would like one too. Lovely to be given something without having arranged it myself. I thanked her, then immediately began explaining where I would put it and how much morning sun it would get. She laughed and said it was only a cutting. It is a very good one. I have put it where I can see it from the kitchen.
